As a frequent weekend visitor to South Beach since 1997 I never actually thought I would leave the beach and enter the "City of Miami".  If you're only in town for the weekend it's difficult to pull yourself away from the beach, the pools, and the fun of South Beach. Recently, however my husband and I purchased a second home in Miami (with a Compass agent of course, thanks Mercedes!) and I have been able to spend the last 3 weeks here. Who knew there was life outside of South Beach!?!

One of our greatest finds has got to be Alter in the Wynwood Art District. Voted one of The 21 Best Restaurants in America by Eater.com, it's a short $13 Uber drive from South Beach. Chef Brad Kilgore (Food+Wine Best New Chef 2016), has worked with such culinary luminaries as Grant Achatz and Jean-Georges Vongerichten and brings a new take on American cuisine. Every course was excellent not only in taste but in fantastic presentation.

One of the most surprising parts of the evening was the cost. The seven course tasting menu is $89 (+$65 for wine pairing) and the four course menu is $69 (+$50 for wine pairing). By New York City standards this is a bargain! And to be honest the food was as good as if not better than many of the NYC restaurants that charge $200 and up for their tasting menus.

So next time you are in South Beach for the weekend take the plunge and leave the beach for a fantastic dinner and experience but be sure to book ahead. With only 40 seats and an obvious following it's takes a few weeks to get a table. Bon apetit!
